Adult Education

Various bible study programs are held throughout the year. Current studies running include:

  • Lectionary Bible Study (Wednesdays at the church)
  • "Upper Room" bimonthy publication (booklet for home bible study)

Book Club

Books that relate to climate change and its effects on the earth and people locally and in worldwide communities are discussed in the light of eco-spirituality. We welcome our community neighbors to join us monthly for good conversation, to meet new and like-minded people, and to share views and ideas in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. If you would like to begin reading, the book which will be discussed at the September 2010 meeting is, "The Geography of Hope", by Chris Turner.

Sunday School Teaching Schedule LINK

Sunday School is available for children ages 3 to Grade 6.  Children begin the Sunday Worship service in the Sanctuary with their family and after Children's Time, the children are escorted to the Sunday School Area in the Lower Hall. Registration forms must be completed for each child and are available from the Sunday School Teachers.

In addition a "Quiet Room" is available at the back of the sanctuary for those little ones who need space to move around during the service and for parents with babies. A speaker system in the room allows those in the room to hear the service.

The curriculum being followed is "Seasons of the Spirit", a lectionary-based series resource created by an international team of writers and editors representing denominations from Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA and UK, and endorsed by the United Church of Canada. The children learn faith stories based on bible teachings through story-telling, art and music. The children have an opportunity to form friendships within the church community.

The classes are led by volunteers, grouped into teams for each class. Frequency of teaching will be determined within each group. Helpers are also required for "hands on" assistance (no preparation work needed and your commitment can be whenever you are available).  If you are interested in teaching or assisting with Sunday School classes, please contact the Sunday School Leader. Any time you have to contribute to the spiritual learning of our children is greatly appreciated. Visit the Sunday School Schedule webpage to find available dates you can volunteer (private page for Sunday School teachers only).

For the children's safety, after service it is very important the parents with children attending Sunday School collect their children immediately after the service. The Teachers will not let the children leave without a parent. If you have any question, contact the Sunday School Leader.

The Sunday School curriculum is available for viewing by registered Sunday School teachers only. For those interested in being a Sunday School teacher, samples of the curriculum can be found on the Season of the Spirit website. LINK

Youth Group

There is programming for Junior Youth (Grades 7-9) and Senior Youth (Grades 10-12) who meet every Sunday morning and monthly for various social events and mission projects. Youth Group programming is throughout the year and takes a break for July and August. The Youth meet in the Youth Room in the Lower Level after the Children's Time of the Sunday service. The curriculum for this year is "Seasons of the Spirit", with supplemental study. Keep an eye on the Events Calendar and check out the Youth Group webpage often. Youth are also involved in the Sunday service with reading the Call to Worship and taking part in the Sacrament of Communion.

Check out the photos from the Youth Justice Not Just Us event! There was a great crowd of 40 youth who shared in fellowship, spiritual exploration, food and fun games. (Please note: only Youth and their family will have access to these photos).

The Red Deer Lake United Church Youth Group is very active.  We have grown to a membership of 27 and our fellowship, outreach and Christian development will only continue to grow.  Our very talented, insightful and energetic group of young adults have chosen to be devoted to leaving a fingerprint on this life that is noticed and significant. The youth will continue to meet for a "Fun" gathering approximately once a month. Parents are encouraged to assist with the planning of these events and also to chaperone at one or two events throughout the year.

The youth have chosen outreach to be one of their focuses.  The goal is to continue outreach throughout the year but will be particularly prevalent during advent.  The current Outreach projects are:

  • Canadian Tire money to purchase work boots. These boots will be donated to guests at the Mustard Seed.
  • Food Bank Sundays on the first Sunday of every month.

Thank you to everyone for their support in the youth mission.

Calgary Presbytery has a city-wide list of events arranged for this year. These may be accessed at the Calgary Youth website
